According to research in the US, internet dating is the 2nd most common way of meeting a partner in Western society. Through friends is still number one, but is fast being caught up by the rise in use of www dating. The digital revolution has taken millions of people out of their ‘comfort’ zones and tossed them into the electronic matchmaking world. Online dating is very wide ranging and caters for everyone including mature (40+) singles, as our Footloose Dating site does, the young, gay, kinky, religious, disabled, married, coloured, fat, thin, sporty….The variants are endless and can be quite surprising! Just goes to show that there really is someone for everyone. Just don’t give up.

However, the research team has warned that some in the industry’s claims offering ‘science-based’ and ‘algorithm based matchmaking’ should be given little credence, so the dating sites that offer any type of ‘matching’ are just using it as a marketing ploy and may lead to unrealistic expectations. At the end of the day, internet dating is just a shopping experience – very hit and miss a lot of the time, but if you hook up with enough people on line, chances are good that you’ll find someone you like – eventually.

Harry Reis, a psychology professor in America, who co-wrote the study commissioned by the Association for Pyychological Science said “Online dating is a new and much needed twist on relationships” but warned online romance has its pitfalls. Looking at the endless list of ‘available singles’ may ‘encourage our shopping mentality in which people become judgemental and picky’. What ever the drawbacks, online dating is now an accepted way of meeting a partner and if expectations are keep within reasonable bounds, it can at the very least, be great fun and at best, a route to romance and happiness.
