The more we move towards a digital existence, the more common online dating is becoming. Having a dating profile on one or two dating websites is no longer limited to the desperate or tech-savvy. It stands to reason that such an avenue for meeting new people that offers both convenience and a way to actually appraise and filter potential dates, can only gain in popularity.

Online dating data in the US shows that 5.5 million singles have opened profiles on dating websites. The data also revealed that online dating is speeding up our courtship — with an average of 18 months between meeting the love of your life online and proposing marriage to them.

So popular has it become, that there are whole books written about the phenomenon. One such book, The rules for online dating, was published by two dating coaches, Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider, in 2009. The book itself focuses on online dating etiquette for women, but many of their tips are easily applied to men too.
